Which DJI drone to choose

23.10.2026 Blog / Comparisons

People often pick a first drone by price and looks, and only later think about weight, class and rules. But weight and class decide whether you need the course. We put the DJI models from our shop together by purpose, with the rules for Latvia. One of these drones was in stock at Kr. Barona 70 on 23.10.2026.

Which DJI drone to choose

Weight and class first

According to dji.com: the Neo 2 weighs 151 g (160 g with the digital transceiver) and is class C0; the Flip is under 249 g, C0; the Mini 5 Pro is 249.9 g, C0 in the Fly More Combo (with the Plus battery the drone is over 250 g and becomes C1); the Air 3S is 724 g, C1; the Avata 2 is about 377 g, C1; the Avata 360 is about 455 g, C1.

Rules in Latvia

According to the Civil Aviation Agency (CAA), droni.caa.gov.lv, as of 23.10.2026. Rules can change, so check the site before you fly.

  • A drone operator (UAS operator) must register at e.caa.gov.lv. It is mandatory if the drone has a camera or another sensor that can capture personal data (toys excepted), or if it weighs 250 g or more. So it applies to every model in this article. Registration costs €5, lasts 1 year, and is done once for all your drones. The number you receive must be marked on each drone.
  • The pilot must be at least 16 (there are exceptions; see the CAA).
  • If the drone is class C1 or weighs 250 g or more, you must take the free online course and pass the A1/A3 exam (40 questions, 40 minutes, at least 75% correct). The course and exam are in Latvian. The certificate is valid for 5 years. Of the models here, that means the Air 3S, Avata 2, Avata 360 and the Mini 5 Pro with the Plus battery. For the Neo 2 and Flip (C0, under 250 g) the course is not required, but the CAA recommends it to every pilot.
  • You may fly up to 120 m above ground, and the drone must stay in direct sight. When flying with goggles (FPV, as with the Avata), an observer must be next to you.
  • A C0 drone or one under 250 g (at up to 19 m/s) may fly over uninvolved people, but not over crowds. With a C1 drone, avoid flying over uninvolved people.
  • Some places have restrictions (UAS geographical zones); the map is at ais.lgs.lv.
  • Insurance requirements depend on the drone’s weight and class; check droni.caa.gov.lv.

Neo 2: affordable and light

The Neo 2 weighs 151 g and is class C0. Its 1/2-inch sensor records 4K, and flight time according to DJI is about 19 minutes (about 17 with propeller guards). A good choice for learning to fly. In our shop: €258.99.

Flip: bigger sensor, longer flight

The Flip weighs under 249 g, is C0, has a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K video and, according to DJI, up to 31 minutes in the air. In our shop: €557.99.

Mini 5 Pro: more camera under 250 g

249.9 g, a 1-inch 50 MP sensor, 4K up to 120 fps and, according to DJI, up to 36 minutes of flight. In the Fly More Combo it is C0; in the Fly More Combo Plus (with the Plus battery) it is C1. Ask us which version ours is. In our shop: €845.99.

Air 3S: two cameras

724 g, C1. A wide-angle camera with a 1-inch sensor (50 MP) and a medium tele with a 1/1.3-inch sensor (48 MP); according to DJI, up to 45 minutes of flight. In our shop: €1,479.99.

Avata: FPV and flying with goggles

The Avata 2 weighs about 377 g, is C1, with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 155° field of view, 4K video and, according to DJI, about 23 minutes of flight. The Avata 360 weighs about 455 g and has two 64 MP sensors and a 360° mode up to 8K. The kits differ (goggles, controller, number of batteries), so the prices can’t be compared directly. Keep the rule in mind: for FPV you need an observer next to you.

Flight times are DJI figures for ideal conditions; in wind, cold and while filming they are shorter.

If your drone crashed

We repair DJI drones in our workshop in Riga. Before you buy a new one, you can show us the old one and we will see what can be done.

Tips

  • Before buying, check the drone’s weight and class: they decide whether you need the course. Any drone with a camera needs registration.
  • For your first flights, pick an open area and check the UAS zone map.
